Call before you burn!

Many Oregonians love to burn their backyard debris in piles or in burn barrels. In the last five years, however, 1,096 debris burns escaped burning 6,005 acres and costing $4.6 million to suppress.

Escaped debris-pile or burn-barrel fires are the #1 cause of wildfires on state protected lands in Oregon.  Preventing these wildfires is your responsibility

Please consider chipping or recycling.  However, if burning is your only option for debris disposal, here are some points to keep your debris burn from becoming Oregon's next wildfire.

Ø

Before you burn, call your local fire district to determine whether or not a permit is required

Ø

Call before you burn to assure burning is allowed

Ø

Follow all burning regulations, including:

ü

Know the weather forecast, especially the wind

ü

Burn only backyard debris (no construction materials or household waste)

ü

If you are using a burn barrel, cover it with ¼” mesh screen

ü

Keep burn barrels away from structures, overhanging branches, or autos.

ü

Keep piles small; add debris to the pile.

ü

Make sure that your fire is out - DEAD OUT - Drown! Stir! Drown!

ü

Monitor for a minimum of 2 hours.
